We are thrilled to announce the release of Mountain Duck 5 – the premier choice to mount server and cloud storage as a disk in Finder on macOS and the File Explorer on Windows.
Version 5 is a solid major upgrade with new features and enhancements, including a new Integrated Connect Mode, storage-independent file versioning support, and SMB connections.
Mountain Duck 5 introduces a future-proof Integrated Connect Mode that leverages native APIs on Windows and macOS to seamlessly integrate cloud storage directly into the file explorer. This eliminates the need for device driver installation or network mount, providing a sync experience similar to OneDrive on Windows or iCloud Drive on macOS with any cloud storage provider of your choice. The connect mode delivers significantly faster file write performance and file operations that match the speed of local disk operations, while local storage is efficiently managed by the operating system. Files appear as a regular folder on disk rather than a remote volume, ensuring full offline accessibility and compatibility with all applications.
The enhanced user experience includes familiar file management controls directly within Finder and Windows Explorer, allowing users to easily select files to keep offline, remove cached data, or exclude items from synchronization. Visual indicators provide instant feedback on synchronization status through additional icons displayed next to filenames. Real-time progress is shown during file transfers with progress bars over file icons and circular progress indicators, giving users complete visibility into upload and download operations. The integration extends to system search capabilities, enabling Windows Search and macOS Spotlight to index and search synchronized files seamlessly.
Mountain Duck 5 introduces storage-independent versioning support, enabling version history for protocols that don't natively support versioning. This feature provides a unified versioning experience across all connection types, ensuring your files are protected with version history regardless of the underlying storage protocol. It helps users to safeguard against potential file loss by stashing changes to a file in a versioned folder on the server.
Mountain Duck 5 expands its protocol support with the addition of SMB (Server Message Block), enabling seamless connectivity to Windows file shares and network-attached storage (NAS) devices. This complements the existing comprehensive protocol support that allows connections to virtually any server, ensuring Mountain Duck remains the most versatile file mounting solution available for both personal, educational, and enterprise environments.
The new Activity Panel gives users complete visibility and control over their background synchronization operations. Track the progress of file uploads and downloads in real-time and easily cancel operations when needed. This powerful feature ensures users always know the status of their file synchronization, providing transparency and control over data transfers between local storage and cloud services.
Mountain Duck 5, combined with any cloud storage, is a viable, more secure solution to synchronize access to documents on multiple computers and users. With Smart Synchronization, files are synchronized to the local disk when opened to allow offline usage and changes are uploaded in the background as soon as a connection is available. Encryption for data at rest using Cryptomator interoperable vaults prevent unauthorized access regardless of the server or cloud storage infrastructure. Based on the solid open source foundation of Cyberduck, all major protocols are supported to connect to just about any server you want.
